Spotlight: Wislawa Szymborska

Poetry International is beginning a new feature which will spotlight an international poet.  We’re kicking it off with a fantastic Polish Nobel Laureate, Wisawa Szymborska.

According to the Book Institute  Szymborska was, “Born in Bnin (near Poznan) in 1923, she has been connected throughout her life with Cracow, where she studied and still lives and works. A poet and essayist, Wislawa Szymborska won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1996. She is known throughout the world thanks to translations published in English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Czech, Slovak, Swedish, Bulgarian, Albanian and Chinese.”  Read more about Szymborska at the Book Institute website.

“Wieczór w Operze Krakowskiej, który zainaugurował jubileusz 50-lecia Wydawnictwa Znak, zgromadził niemal tysiąc gości.”

Translated: “Evening at the Opera Krakow, who inaugurated the 50th anniversary of publishing Mark, amassed nearly a thousand guests.”

“Wislawa Szymborska w Rzymie – Urodziny”

Translated: “Wislawa Szymborska in Rome – Birthday”
